Connecting jazz history to living musical culture through teaching, clinics, ensemble work and community engagement.
Alongside his work as a performer and recording musician, Freddie Dunn has maintained an active role in music education. His teaching has included trumpet, trombone, jazz studies, band direction, private instruction, clinics and ensemble development.
As part of the Baltimore Jazz Educators Project, Dunn instructed students in trumpet, trombone and jazz. He also served as director of bands at City Neighbors Charter School, building a band and music education program while exposing students to high-quality jazz on record and in live performance.
His approach treats jazz as a living language: history and fundamentals matter, but so do creativity, listening, groove, collaboration and the music students encounter in contemporary culture.
